How to Greet Your Retail Customers

Series 3 | Part 1 of 2 — Whizbang Retail Training

In breaking down the steps that go into the perfect purchase, Bob Negen of WhizBang Retail Training highlights the importance of a warm and friendly greeting. It’s important to make sure the customer feels welcome and comfortable as soon as they walk through the door, he says. Watch and learn from Bob.

First, think of the customer as a fellow human being

The first step to creating a perfect purchase at an independent retailer, such as a fashion boutique or a footwear store, is greeting your customer and establishing a warm personal relationship. But before you say a single word to your customer, you need to get your mindset right and think about that person the right way. You need to see them as a fellow human being, not as a sale or a credit card, but a real person who has needs, fears, wants, hang-ups, anxieties, expertise, and talents—good stuff and bad stuff. You don’t have to become their best friend or delve into their personal secrets. You just need to relate to them as a human being.

Then, greet them as you would a friend

It’s simple to start a relationship. Just offer every customer who walks through the door of your retail store some warm welcoming words, like “Hello, Hi, or Good morning.” The same words you’d use to greet a friend. Your greeting is the easy beginning of a perfect purchase.
